Week 6 October 1 to October 5th

I am re-posting some materials from last week as we will conclude discussion on Chapter Two and prepare for our look at a very important chapter, Chapter Three. There will a  test on Thursday, Day 1. See below for review.

Hesed Hesed is difficult to translate because it stands for a cluster of ideas—love, mercy, grace, kindness. It wraps up in itself all the positive attributes of God.  Hesed is one of the Lord's most treasured characteristics. Steadfast (covenant) love

Mercy Day 2018

I will be making adjustments to our course content during this week. On Monday, I will present an exercise to be completed in class on Tuesday. I will be out on a field trip Tuesday. The in-class  assignment will be completed for homework Tuesday evening.

Prayer: El Shaddai

El Shaddai (אל שׁדי) is most often translated as "God Almighty".
El-Elyon na Adonai (אל עליון נא אדני) is a combination of two names for God, meaning "God Most High, please my Lord".
Erkamka na Adonai is based on Psalm 18:1 (except for the "na," which is added) Erḥamkha (ארחמך) Adonai, "I love you, my Lord."

Week 4 - September 17th to September 21st



During this week we will "unpack" Chapter 2, "Beginnings" using Scripture and a few handouts (including notes) for consideration. 

Looking ahead : There will be Chapter Two quiz or test (depending how far we get into the material) Thursday, September 27th, Day 4. It will include your homework as well as notes introduced in class.

Week Three - September 10th - September 16th

Wednesday, Day 1 - Short Test on Chapter 1 (see below)

Our week's work together will begin exploring Chapter 2 of of your text, "Beginnings" pages 29 - 56. There will be in-class reading of text along with additional articles for your consideration. I will distribute some notes, but for the most part I would like for you to complete the "For Review" questions on pages 38, 47, 51 (not 56) as part of your notes for class. We will discuss these questions beginning NEXT week.

Our Test on Chapter 2 will not be until Thursday, September 27 (Day 4). This will be a objective/ short answer essay test based upon the For Review responses of chapters  2 and main concepts discussed in class. 

This Wednesday we will have an assessment on Chapter 1.  Review your the primer (first two pages in particular).  Be sure to commit to memory the definition of salvation history.

Gaining a new perspective on what it means to be human. This course will be about "new perspectives" and those people and events that hopefully inspire us.


Tuesday - Due in class:



1. Complete the Freshman Introductory Letter due Sept. 4 (not graded)

2.View the first 14 minutes of the video on the Origins of the Bible (the first video on this blog)

3. Read pages 7-12 answer the first and third questions  on page 12.Complete this in your "Notes" section of your binder.

Be sure to submit your "Peanuts" questions On Tuesday, September 4th.




In Class
  Discussion of "For Review" on page 12. In what sense can the Bible be thought of as a time capsule from God? What does it mean to say that Scriptures are the Words of God? What does it mean to say that they are inspired by God? Explain how the Bible can be thought of as the result of a collaboration of God and human beings?

Assignment: Read text pages 13 - 24 (You may quickly review maps although the map on p. 20 is a good synopsis of key historical events)
We do the following in class tomorrow (Wednesday!):
1. Find 5 events or persons to put on your timeline in front of your book.
2. Highlight the definition of canon

4. Begin to brainstorm on person who inspires you.
